The Skeptic Learns A
Thing Or Two . . .
Serra was about two years old when Mike and I
took her to walk around a pet fair in Seattle - it was huge event
held in a lovely park right on Lake Washington. Lot of dogs,
activities, and many vendors. Serra is a worrier so we do our best
to help her learn the world is a safe place with many, carefully
selected outings. While walking through one of the buildings, we
saw an Animal Communicator was set up in a corner. As a fund raiser
for a local rescue group, she was taking one question for a $5
donation.
I’ll admit that I’m a skeptic by nature. If it
can’t be seen, touched, tasted, or heard, I just can’t be convinced
it’s there. However, it was only 5 bucks and for a good cause. So,
we meandered over and I asked my question. I decided to make it a
real question and prepared to be amused . . .
“This is Serra. She’s a show dog but we’ve
been having a problem. She doesn’t really like showing but does an
okay job. However, every once in a while, she really wigs out -
eyes glazed, panting, and trying to leave the area. I’ve paid
careful attention and can’t find a single thing different between
the okay times and the bad times. I’d like to know what is causing
her upset so I can avoid those situations.”
Silent discussion between the communicator and
Serra ensued. Those that read a little sarcasm in that last
statement interpreted correctly. Wait, though, as it will take less
than 5 minutes for me to be stunned and shivery!
The lady told me many interesting things
(including I’m about as psychic as a fence post) but the gist of the
discussion is that it turns out that Serra is extraordinarily
psychic. All dogs, apparently, are psychic (can read energies) to a
certain extent but Serra is a prodigy. Now, here’s where it gets
tricky. Serra is still very “young” in her skills. Just like a
toddler can sometimes become confused about their make-believe world
and the real world, Serra can’t tell which dogs are real dogs and
which are ghosts. Even after they are dead, dogs still like to hang
out with other dogs, so ghosts congregate whenever there are large
groups of dogs assembled; like dog shows. When we are at those
shows, Serra becomes upset when a dog she thinks is real walks
through her because it’s actually a spirit.
I decide to play along . . . “Okay, so I should
pay attention and “send” her what dogs I’m seeing?”
“No! Serra is too sensitive for sending of
thoughts. It would be like shouting at her. Just be mindful of all
you see and open to wanting to help her.”
Uh-huh. Well, I thank the lady, figuring the
$5 went to a good cause. But, before I can leave her booth, she
says a final thing. Serra really wants to explain about the place
you visited a short while ago. It was a big place, lots of land.
There were many friends for me to play with and many dogs just like
her. I was disappointed that Serra had gone off to hunt alone and
not stayed to play with the dogs. She wants me to know that she can
be certain any dogs she sees when she’s hunting alone are ghosts, so
she isn’t frightened. If she stayed around the group, she’ never be
sure and she doesn’t like that.
A moment of startled silence, then I thank the
lady, again, and we walk on. Startled? Why, you ask? The previous
weekend, we had gone to a friend’s farm for a Pharaoh Hound party.
Many friends and a nice large gathering of Pharaoh Hounds. As we
sat at the picnic tables, chatting and eating, I did wish that Serra
would be a little more sociable with the dogs. While they were all
milling around, playing with each other, Serra was one the far side
of the pasture, having a fine time hunting all alone!
That startling revelation was good enough for
me to give the communicator’s advice a try. At the next dog show
and all others after that, I remained mindful of all that I saw.
Serra never had another spooky moment and finished her championship
very quickly after that.
Interesting, huh? Shivers! :-)
